A NEW CHAPTER FOR OUR
WATERWAYS

The Ocean Cleanup has come to the Philippines to implement river waste interception systems to prevent plastic waste from reaching Manila Bay as part of their 30 Cities Program.
For the first deployment, the project site is located along the Meycauayan River (Caingin Road), part of the Marilao–Meycauayan–Obando River System (MMORS).
CORA’s role is to support the project by implementing the Social Scope, ensuring that project implementation is community-informed, socially responsible, and supported by local stakeholders.

Why the Meycauayan River?
-
Major waterway in Bulacan; key tributary of the Marilao–Meycauayan–Obando River System.
-
It is connected to Manila Bay, with its waters eventually flowing toward the bay.
-
Supports local drainage, livelihoods, and surrounding communities
-
Heavily impacted by solid waste, untreated wastewater, and industrial discharge
-
Results in environmental degradation and recurring flooding in nearby barangays
-

What is the Social Scope?
Technology alone isn't enough.
Communities are at the heart of this work.
The Social Scope is intended for:
-
Communities to understand the project
-
Stakeholders to be are consulted
-
Potential social risks to be identified early
-
Community concerns to be addressed
-
Local opportunities to be created (livelihood and such)
-
The project to earn and maintain a “social license” to operate
What CORA does

Identify key stakeholders and risks to guide effective project planning

Understand community behaviors and perceptions on waste and river pollution

Build awareness and encourage community support for upcoming interventions
